"Carry-On" Campaign

“Carry On” Campaign

Mission West Virginia, Inc., a non-profit social service organization based in Hurricane, WV, along with Concord University Sociology students are heading a “Carry On” Campaign throughout April to recognize Child Abuse Awareness/Prevention Month.  Additional sponsors of this campaign are WV DHHR, US Attorney’s Offices, Northern and Southern Districts of WV, WV Child Advocacy Network, WV Endangered Children Task Force, and WV Prosecuting Attorneys Institute.  The purpose of this campaign is to provide personal belongings and a means to carry the items for children moving to and from the foster homes.   There are more than 4,000 children currently in the foster care program in the State of West Virginia.  Amy Hunt, Region 4 (basically Southern WV) Homefinding Supervisor for DHHR, stated that over 850 children were in care last year in our area alone, and they are expecting the numbers to increase in 2011.  Sadly, most of these children have little or no personal belongings, and if they do, they carry them in a garbage bag.  WV Prison Industries have made over 1000 canvas duffle bags to be given to children as they are placed in foster homes.  The heart of MountainHeart Community Services, Inc. is to help children.  We would like to help fill these bags with items such as stuffed animals, toothbrushes and toothpaste, non-perishable snacks, hair brushes and combs, books, crayons, coloring books, socks, blankets, stuffed animals, small toys, journals, and toiletries.  It is recommended that you do not donate liquid items, as these may leak.  Please help restore some dignity to these innocent children by contributing what you can.  You may drop off donations at any of our MountainHeart locations.  Help these children not only “carry on” their personal belongings, but help them “carry on” life with their heads held high and hope in their hearts.
